Flats have been approved for construction in Heathfield, near the Old Mill site on Station Road. Residents had raised serious concerns about lack of parking infrastructure, surface water run off onto Swaines Way, a residential road, and that current residents - particularly living on Swaines Way would be adversely impacted by any development - especially with respect to their privacy.
The previous councillor had called the application in for debate amongst councillors. The new councillor for the ward - Kevin Benton (Independent) - had prepared a statement which was read out by the committee in their absence. Cllr Benton supported the application, however had some reservations. Ultimatley, the committee voted to support the application.
Residents along Swaines Way will now be faced with a significant block of flats, impacting their privacy. One resident has raised concerns that the local car park will now also be overwhelmed by parked cars. Each flat has only been allocated one car parking space, despite being situated in a rural town.
